Cozumel
The international scuba diving community is well aware of Cozumel and it’s legendary status as the most incredible scuba diving destination of the Caribbean and one of the global hot-spots for scuba diving. Mexican filmmaker René Cardona and French underwater pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau contributed to the fame of Cozumel starting in the 1960s. But what makes diving here so special?
Besides having splendid conditions all year around with sunny and warm weather, almost no surf, visibility beyond 100ft (over 30m), Cozumel is home to an enormous variety of dive sites for all tastes and levels of experience. The extreme southern part of the island (Santa Rosa Reef, Bay of Palancar dive sites, Punta Sur Reef) is dominated by unique coral formations growing over centuries and reaching over 100ft (30m) in height offering countless options for swim throughs, tunnels and caverns. And if this was not enough, those formations are situated on the edge of the mighty Abyss of Cozumel, a 2000ft (600m) deep trench that connects coastal and deep sea environments, resulting in high levels of nutrition and wildlife! This canyon represents also our “playground” for technical and deep diving in the ocean.
All boat dives in Cozumel are drift dives. On one hand this brings a lot of dynamics and fun to the dive, on the other hand it gives us the opportunity to cover even longer distances and thereby increases the chance of spotting more incredible animals like nurse sharks, eagle rays, morays, turtles and corals. As long as logistics and safety considerations allow it, you are very much invited to ask for specific places, environments or dive sites. If you do not have any specific ideas yet, please do not hesitate to get in contact with Benji beforehand to discuss which dive sites will be most interesting and rewarding for your specific background and experience.
In general, all dive sites can be reached on any day, but some spots are considered as special dive sites for their more remote location. Those spots need to be requested in advance and require a nominal additional charge.
Special dive site: Barracuda, San Juan, Eagle Ray Wall, C-53 Wreck, Colombia, Punta Sur/ Devil’s Throat, Chun Chacaab und Maracaibo.

A Benji Divers day of scuba diving usually starts around 9.15 AM at the Marina Fonatur, where we get aboard our comfortable diving vessel – frequently the Big Splash.
It is a trip of approximately one hour through the calm waters of the Canal of Cozumel to reach our first dive site in the most southern part of the island. After a comprehensive briefing, your private guide will take you on the first dive of the day. Our dives typically do not have any time limitation. We take advantage of at least one hour of surface interval to have an amazing lunch aboard (included in price) and to drive to a second dive site with different characteristics and other highlights to look for. Lunch includes nachos with home-made guacamole, sandwiches, salads, fruits and cookies. After the second dive, we drive back to the harbor and to our respective meeting point or accommodation, arriving usually around 3 PM. The entire day of scuba diving including 2 tanks, transport, entry fee for marine park, private guide for small group (preferably 2-4 people) and lunch has a price of 2.400 MXN per person. If you do not have your own equipment, you can rent it with us. Just let us know your sizes and preferences, and we will have your gear ready for you at the boat.
